College canceled Tuesday in three North Shore cities as lecturers strike

Three North Shore college districts cancelled college Tuesday after educators and the districts failed to succeed in a contract deal over the lengthy weekend to avert instructor strikes.

Lecturers in Beverly and Gloucester voted to strike Thursday, main courses to be cancelled in each districts Friday. The Marblehead Training Affiliation (MEA) voted to strike Tuesday if a deal couldn’t be reached over the weekend.

All three college districts launched advisories Monday stating college and after-school extracurriculars shall be cancelled on Tuesday.

“We all stand at a critical juncture as our school committees refuse to bargain in good faith with educators across the North Shore,” stated Andrea Sherman, co-president of the Beverly Training Affiliation (BEA) in a joint press convention at 8 p.m. Monday.

The three unions have said they’ve been concerned in stalled contract negotiations for months and are searching for improved wages, particularly for “grossly underpaid” paraprofessionals; paid household go away; college security enhancements and extra.

The three present strikes adopted strikes searching for comparable contract targets in Andover, Haverhill, Malden, Newton, Brookline, and Woburn in latest college years, a few of which lasted over per week. “Let me be clear, Beverly educators were prepared since our strike vote to bargain around the clock this whole long weekend to get a contract settled,” stated Sherman. “We have been here for more than 30 hours. Instead, Mayor Cahill and his school committee relished the opportunity to punish educators for saying enough is enough.”

The unions held a raucous joint rally of help in Gloucester on Monday afternoon. Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren additionally issued statements of help for the placing lecturers learn on the rally Monday.

Gloucester and Beverly Public Colleges each said they may supply grab-and-go meals for pickup through the college day.
