‘I Forgot To Be Your Lover’: William Bell Rings Up A Stax Hit

Memphis soul man William Bell was making his residence city label Stax proud in 1968, particularly throughout the Atlantic. After reaching the UK High 40 with “A Tribute To A King,” his acknowledgement of the good Otis Redding (who had died a number of months earlier), he and Judy Clay went to No.8 on the British chart with the soul anthem “Private Number.”

That duet was a much bigger hit within the UK than it was on both the R&B or pop chart within the States. However on December 21, 1968, Bell entered the soul listings with the monitor that might turn out to be his first High 10 hit on that chart, “I Forgot To Be Your Lover.”

The gradual, deep soul lower was written by Bell with the good keyboard participant and artist-producer Booker T Jones, who additionally produced it. The monitor debuted at No.33 on Bestselling Rhythm & Blues Singles as Marvin Gaye continued his reign with “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” and within the week that “Private Number” climbed into the UK High 20.

“I Forgot To Be Your Lover” went on to succeed in No.10 on the Soul chart and, though it solely made No.45 on the pop aspect, it was a track that might have a stunning rebirth all of 18 years later. Billy Idol remade it in his rock’n’roll-flavored pop type of the time as “To Be A Lover,” and noticed it climb to No.6 on the Billboard Sizzling 100.
