Harvard College sues Trump administration over ‘unlawful’ $2 billion funding freeze

Harvard is taking the Trump administration to court docket.

After the feds froze greater than $2 billion in grants to the Cambridge campus and threatened its tax-exempt standing, Harvard has filed a lawsuit towards the Trump admin in Massachusetts federal court docket.

The Trump admin final week despatched a listing of calls for to Harvard for the college to obtain federal analysis funding. These calls for included an “audit” of the viewpoints of Harvard’s scholar physique, school, and workers, eliminating DEI packages, and extra.

Hours after Harvard rejected the calls for, the feds froze greater than $2 billion in grants and contracts to the college, and President Trump pushed for the IRS to strip the campus of its tax-exempt standing.

Now on Monday, Harvard filed a lawsuit towards the Trump admin “to halt the funding freeze because it is unlawful and beyond the government’s authority,” Harvard President Alan Garber wrote.

“Over the course of the past week, the federal government has taken several actions following Harvard’s refusal to comply with its illegal demands,” Garber advised the campus group.

“These actions have stark real-life consequences for patients, students, faculty, staff, researchers, and the standing of American higher education in the world,” he added.
