Sam Rivers’ A New Conception is ready to obtain a reissue courtesy of Blue Be aware’s legendary Tone Poet sequence.
The 1966 sequence of requirements options Rivers on tenor sax, soprano sax, and flute. This stereo Tone Poet Vinyl Version was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Grey from the unique analog grasp tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. The brand new version will arrive July 4.
Rivers was raised in Chicago. His father was a church musician who toured with a gospel quartet and his mom taught music and sociology at Shorter School in Little Rock, Arkansas, the place the household later lived. Rivers started taking piano and violin classes at 5. He quickly moved on to the trombone, selecting the tenor. Rivers moved to Boston within the late Nineteen Forties, finding out on the Boston Conservatory of Music and Boston College. By 1964, Rivers was now dwelling in New York and was employed by Miles Davis on Tony Williams’ suggestion. He additionally performed on Lifetime, Williams’ debut as a bandleader.
Rivers himself emerged as a bandleader with a pair of influential albums of unique music, Fuchsia Swing Tune and Contours. He went in a special path on his follow-up, A New Conception, a set of requirements interpreted by a quartet that includes Hal Galper on piano, Herbert Lewis on bass, and Steve Ellington on drums.
In 1970, Rivers and his spouse, Bea, opened a dance and music studio in Harlem, later relocating to Soho. Named Studio Rivbea, the house turned a widely known venue for the presentation of latest jazz. Rivers’ personal Rivbea Orchestra rehearsed and carried out there, as did his improvisational trio and his Winds of Change woodwind ensemble. A lot of this early- to mid-’70s music was documented on the Impulse! label.
