With federal grant funding in limbo, BPS officers say they aren’t presently planning to chop employees whose applications depend on these grants.
“Right now, the funding is indicating from the federal government a delay,” Superintendent Mary Skipper stated in a gathering with the Boston Faculty Committee. “I want to emphasize a couple things. One is that we do not believe that there’ll be an impact to any BPS employees for the coming school year, 2025-26, or for any of the current BPS summer programming.”
The BPS information comes days after the Trump administration introduced it will withhold $6 billion in congressionally permitted schooling funding nationwide till additional overview.
As of July 1, $108 million as a consequence of Massachusetts districts had been withheld, in accordance with state officers.
Skipper stated Wednesday the district was making ready a memo for the Faculty Committee to “further delineate and explain what the potential impact is for us.”
“We hope that this is money that gets released because it can’t underscore enough, this is $8 million for us,” Skipper stated. “It funds some really critical needs areas of the organization.”
The Title grant {dollars} are the areas being withheld, Skipper stated, notably Title II Half A. These funds go to “supporting effective instruction,” the superintendent defined, on applications for scholar achievement, principal growth and extra.
The freeze can be impacting Title III {dollars}, for language instruction for English learners and immigrant college students; Title IV Half A, for scholar help and educational enrichment; and Title IIII Half B, for the twenty first Century Studying Facilities grant, Skipper stated.
The district is “actively looking within our own budget for temporary funding” to offset the potential losses, the superintendent famous.
Skipper stated that for now “all we know is this is delay,” and the district hopes to keep away from the everlasting lack of the funds.
BPS officers beforehand acknowledged that as a lot as $100 million in federal funding – equal to six% of the district’s funds and two-thirds of the exterior fund – may very well be at substantial danger for the district because the Trump administration moved to dismantle the Division of Training.
“Again, this will not impact our summer, but this is certainly something that we need to keep you informed about, we need to keep our community informed about,” Skipper stated. “And we’re going to be doing a lot of the planning, as we’ve already begun, for how we might be able to support and offset some of these critical need services.”
