Mayor Michelle Wu had an ideal Saturday: her bid for a second time period was endorsed by 5 Service Workers Worldwide Union teams, representing 135,000 Massachusetts employees.
“SEIU members have a tradition of deep political engagement, and the unions’ endorsements bring with them hundreds of active volunteers who will help get out the vote and lift up key issues important to union members in the mayoral race,” the SEIU Massachusetts State Council press launch states.
The 5 unions made their endorsement Saturday afternoon on the downtown Boston union corridor of the 32BJ SEIU union, which says it’s the most important property service employees’ union within the nation, boasting greater than 175,000 members throughout 12 states, together with 19,000 in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
32BJ was joined by 4 different union teams: 1199SEIU United Healthcare Employees East, which has greater than 85,000 members within the Bay State; SEIU 1957 CIR, which incorporates greater than “20,000 medical interns, residents and fellows nationally”; SEIU Native 509, with “20,000 health, human service, and higher education workers”; and SEIU Native 888, with “8,000 workers in state and municipal services and higher education.”
The main endorsement follows that of the Boston Police Patrolman’s Affiliation final month.
Wu’s bid is challenged by Josh Kraft, the son of billionaire New England Patriots proprietor Robert Kraft and former head of the household’s philanthropic efforts. If nobody else declares, then the Sept. 9 major isn’t required. The election is ready for Nov. 4.
