Boston metropolis councilor requires ‘hate crime’ investigation into vandalized Virgin Mary statue at South Finish church

The Boston Police Division is investigating vandalism that occurred on the Cathedral of the Holy Cross within the South Finish, the place a statue of the Virgin Mary was defaced with graffiti.

Boston Metropolis Councilor Ed Flynn, who represents the South Finish and posted a photograph of the vandalism on X Thursday, mentioned he has been in touch with the police division and has really useful that the incident be investigated as a hate crime.

A Boston Police Division spokesperson confirmed that the incident, which occurred at 1400 Washington St., was being investigated.

A BPD officer responded to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross shortly earlier than 9 a.m. Thursday, and spoke with an individual, whose title was redacted and mentioned the vandalism occurred someday between 8 p.m. Wednesday and seven a.m. the next morning, a Boston police report states.

“An unknown person defaced the Virgin Mary statue using pink chalk writing illegible religious ramblings,” the individual instructed the responding officer, per the police report.

The police report doesn’t record the incident as a hate/bias crime.

Terrence Donilon, a spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Boston, mentioned the Archdiocese is “aware of the vandalism at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.”

“At this point it is a police matter,” Donilon mentioned in an announcement. “The statue has been cleaned by Cathedral staff. We will draw no conclusions at this point about what would prompt someone to vandalize the statue of our Blessed Mother. However, we are praying for whoever is responsible.”
