A crane putting a barge into the water off the East Boston seashore collapsed, dropping the barge onto one other boat, authorities stated. Nobody was injured.
The collapse occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on the Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina, a non-public enterprise located on Massport property in Eastie, in line with Massachusetts State Police spokesman Tim McGuirk. The handle of the enterprise is 256 Marginal St.
McGuirk stated that along with the Hearth Division, MSP Troop F and the Marine Unit responded to the collapse. The crane was putting a barge into the waterway when it collapsed, inflicting the barge to slide and harm a moored boat with no occupants.
Boston Hearth Division Commissioner Paul Burke advised reporters on the scene that a number of of the straps between the crane and a barge — which he estimated weighs 5 tons — “let go.”
“It slid down pretty forcefully into the water because it’s a heavy piece of equipment,” Burke stated.
Burke stated there have been “no injuries at all,” although his division didn’t know that once they rushed to the decision and introduced a dive group in case the crane operator had fallen into the water.
“Luckily nobody was in that boat, the crane operator’s safe, there was nobody around, no pedestrians walking underneath it,” Burke stated. “It’s not secure now so we are waiting for another crane to come in and secure it.”
Boston Police Division spokesman Officer Mark Marron additionally stated that the dock supporting the crane fell midway off the pier. He then stated that it was an MSP matter and directed additional inquiries to that company.
