Crime Briefs: Chelsea man bites off police officer’s ear throughout battle, DA says

A 27-year-old man from Chelsea was held with out bail this week after native prosecutors accused him of biting off a chunk of a police officer’s ear throughout a response to a home violence incident final week, authorities stated.

Chelsea police responded to a group middle within the metropolis on the afternoon of Aug. 30 for a home dispute, in line with Suffolk County District Legal professional Kevin Hayden’s workplace. Police encountered Carlos Sanabria, 27, once they arrived and described him as being “uncooperative,” authorities stated.

Sanabria refused to show the video to police and became increasingly more upset,” prosecutors stated. “As Sanabria left the building, he began yelling at an officer before charging at him and throwing punches.”

“Sanabria then bent his head down and bit the officer’s ear, tearing a piece of it off,” prosecutors stated in an announcement.

A second police officer then positioned Sanabria in a chokehold and used a taser on him, Hayden’s workplace stated. Police ultimately positioned Sanabria in handcuffs, authorities stated.

The officer whose ear was bitten was “immediately treated” and transported to a neighborhood hospital.

Sanabria was charged with mayhem, strangulation, assault and battery on a police officer, assault to homicide, and resisting arrest, Hayden’s workplace stated.

He was arraigned Tuesday in Chelsea District Courtroom and was held with out bail pending a dangerousness listening to later this month. A clinician has additionally been ordered to judge him, Hayden’s workplace stated.

Hayden stated a dangerousness listening to “is entirely appropriate here to ensure the safety of first responders and the larger community.”

“This is an example of how unpredictable domestic violence calls can be for police officers, and how rapidly their day-to-day responsibilities can turn chaotic. This officer was injured in the line of courageous duty and I wish him a quick recovery,” Hayden stated in an announcement.
