Lady dies of accidents after rescue from New Bedford fireplace

A New Bedford lady has died of accidents sustained when she was trapped on the third flooring throughout a fireplace final week, authorities introduced Tuesday.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones who are mourning today,” stated New Bedford Hearth Chief Brian Medeiros. “This is a terrible loss for them and our city.”

Simply after 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, native firefighters responded to studies of fireplace at a multi-family dwelling at 396-398 Elm Road, the state Division of Hearth Service said. On the way in which, emergency  responders have been advised residents have been trapped on the second and third flooring of the house.

On the scene, the firefighters noticed fireplace on the second flooring and “heavy smoke” on each higher flooring, the division stated, and entered the burning construction.

The responders entered up inside stairs and floor ladders, DFS stated. On the third flooring, they discovered a girl in her 70s trapped.

The resident was taken out and transported by New Bedford EMS to an space hospital, the division stated, in “critical condition.”

The lady was later moved to Massachusetts Common Hospital in Boston, the place she died. Her identify shouldn’t be being launched at the moment, the division stated Tuesday.

Following the fireplace, practically a dozen residents of the constructing have been displaced and are being assisted by the Purple Cross, DFS stated.
