A neighborhood faculty pupil accused of hacking into laptop networks and extorting the businesses for ransoms has pleaded responsible, based on the feds.
Assumption College pupil Matthew Lane, 19, allegedly hacked into the pc networks of two U.S.-based corporations, and stole hundreds of thousands of information with confidential and personally identifiable data.
Lane then allegedly extorted the businesses for ransoms.
“Cyber extortion is a serious attack on our economy and on all of us,” Massachusetts U.S. Lawyer Leah Foley stated. “As alleged, this defendant stole personal details about hundreds of thousands of kids and lecturers, imposed substantial monetary prices on his victims, and instilled worry in dad and mom that their children’ data had been leaked into the fingers of criminals – all to place a notch in his hacking belt.
“The alleged ransoms that this defendant and others like him demand hurt victim companies and their innocent customers whose data the companies are entrusted to hold,” Foley added.
Lane allegedly agreed with others to extort a $200,000 ransom fee from a telecommunications firm by threatening to publicly disseminate buyer information that had been stolen from the corporate’s laptop community.
When the corporate questioned whether or not a ransom fee would actually finish the specter of its buyer information being leaked, Lane allegedly responded, “We are the only ones with a copy of this data now. Stop this nonsense [or] your executives and employees will see the same fate… Make the correct decision and pay the ransom. If you keep stalling, it will be leaked.”
