A bunch of Canadian premiers and northeastern governors plan to convene in Boston June 16 to debate the impacts of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on the US and its neighbor to the north, in accordance with Gov. Maura Healey’s workplace.
Healey’s workplace pitched the assembly earlier this month as a means for governors who oversee states that depend on commerce with Canada to take care of “open lines of communication and cooperation” to beat probably detrimental impacts of the tariffs.
In a letter final month from Healey and 5 different state executives, the governors stated companies on either side of the border “are already facing severe consequences from the trade war as the tariffs make life increasingly more expensive for our people and our businesses.”
“As we continue to navigate this period of great uncertainty, we are committed to preserving cross-border travel, encouraging tourism in our respective jurisdictions, amenities,” the governors stated within the letter.
The letter was signed by Healey, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, Maine Gov. Janet Mills, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee, and Vermont Gov. Phil Scott. All the governors are Democrats besides Scott, who’s a Republican.
The invitation was prolonged to the premiers of six Canadian provinces — New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Québec.
Healey’s workplace stated particulars of the June assembly can be launched previous to the occasion.
Trump has stated he desires to make Canada the 51st state of the US and has positioned tariffs on exports from the long-standing ally.
