State Police and public security officers this week introduced plans for a brand new state crime lab in Marlborough that they are saying will hold Massachusetts at the forefront of the behind-the-scenes police work that’s more and more key to main investigations.
Building on the 200,000-square-foot facility, which is to be developed by Greatland Realty Companions and leased by the state, is predicted to get underway early subsequent 12 months.
The lab is predicted to open for greater than 250 workers in early 2028, the Healey administration stated. The Marlborough web site will consolidate present amenities in Maynard and Sudbury underneath one roof.
“Our crime lab professionals play a vital role in investigations across Massachusetts. We’re incredibly proud of their behind-the-scenes work and their deep commitment to delivering unbiased, science-based evidence to inform investigations and detect crime patterns,” Col. Geoff Noble, superintendent of the State Police, stated. “This new cutting-edge crime lab will enhance our ability to uphold national standards of forensic excellence, support law enforcement statewide, and provide justice for victims and families.”
The Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory is a full-service laboratory system with 9 present places throughout the state. Scientists who work within the community reply to crime scenes, present skilled testimony, and carry out laboratory testing on DNA, firearms, medication, explosives, fingerprints, and extra.
“Massachusetts is a national leader in forensic science. Beyond the critical infrastructure, this project represents our continued commitment to scientific excellence, justice and public safety innovation,” Public Security and Safety Secretary Terrence Reidy stated.
Preliminary 2024 crime information confirmed there have been 231,442 crimes reported in Massachusetts final 12 months, down 6.53% from 2023 when all crimes and down 4.4% in comparison with 2023 when wanting simply at “part one” crimes like homicide, rape, theft, arson, larceny and housebreaking.
When the administration introduced the plan, it stated a long-term lease for the 100 Martinangelo Drive location “has been executed in accordance with Asset Management Board approval, which authorized a 20-year lease term with two, 10-year extension options.”
That strategy, state officers stated, “is enabling the state police to obtain a much-needed facility several years faster than would be possible if the project had been delivered through traditional capital borrowing and public construction.”
