Ryan Fitzpatrick will undergo surgery on his injured hip Tuesday — officially ending any chance the Washington quarterback could come back this season, according to multiple reports.

Fitzpatrick, 39, was already a long shot to return this year from the injury. Last month, coach Ron Rivera said Fitzpatrick was “trending toward” not playing again in 2021 after reports emerged the veteran’s season was likely done. But now, surgery will help him sidelined for an additional amount of time.

The surgery, the NFL Network reported, will help Fitzpatrick’s hip injury heal. Fitzpatrick has been hurt since he suffered a hip subluxation in just the second quarter of the team’s season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. Signed to a one-year, $10 million deal, Fitzpatrick completed just three of six passes for 13 yards before the injury.

Washington has gone with Taylor Heinicke as Fitzpatrick’s replacement. Heinicke has played well of late, helping the team climb out of a 2-6 hole to improve to 6-6 on the season.

Fitzpatrick will be a free agent after the season. He has not said publicly if he plans on continuing his NFL career.

The NFL Network first reported news of Fitzpatrick‘s surgery.
